Throughout the many years I’ve been working with thousands of animals, I’m continually learning more about how stress impacts the well-being of our pets, both mentally and physically. When addressing the most common challenges, anxiety is nearly always at the root of problematic behaviors. This anxiety has many sources, including physical pain from illness and injury, and the many stressors in the environment, of which people are often completely unaware.
Environment has been largely disregarded in many behavior modification protocols. Pet parents are understandably discouraged when, despite their best efforts, their pets‘ continue to struggle. This is because we cannot change an animal‘s behavior without considering all of the factors that cause or contribute to the underlying problem.
In upcoming posts, we will explain why the spaces surrounding all of us matter so much. There are lots of simple things we can do to get rid of unnecessary stressors and create soothing spaces for our animals and ourselves!
